Cross-Account ATA for Multi-Dwelling Units

Modified on Tue, 14 Jan at 11:00 PM

Service providers who sell to customers running multi-dwelling units (MDUs), such as apartments, dorms, senior living facilities, and other high-density housing, often need a single telephone adapter that can be used to service all users in the building. To accomplish this, some service providers have set up third-party provisioned devices that don’t require a MAC address, such as an Adtran.

The MAC address, can be shared between different accounts on the same partition, which means individual ports can be assigned to different units that can be managed and billed for separately. Available with Cloud PBX and Business Cloud Communications.

Set up a shared MAC address

Once an ATA or MTA device has been added to one account, the same device can be shared on other accounts. For the shared lines, enter the same device type and MAC address as the primary. As long as the line number hasn't been set up for that device before, the system will let you save it.

Important:

  • Device settings, such as Fax Enabled, can be set up for individual lines in each account's device settings.
  • A device swap will reassign the device across all accounts using the MAC address.
  • To see which accounts are sharing the device, search for the MAC address in the Admin Portal or download a Devices report.
